這部貝多芬唯一的小提琴協奏曲，發表於一八○六年。作曲家譜寫此曲時，心目中的理想演奏者是知名小提琴家克萊門特（Franz Clement）。克萊門特是當時的提琴巨匠，時任維也納劇院第一小提琴手和指揮。據說此君具有像帕格尼尼一樣駭人的演奏技巧，也許是這股挑戰與嚐試之心，促使不長於小提琴的貝多芬動手寫作這部作品。

第一樂章：稍微綿延地….快板 (Un poco sostenuto…Allegro)
第二樂章：綿延的行板 (Andante sostenuto)
第三樂章：有一點稍快板與優美的 ( Un poco Allegretto e grazioso)
第四樂章：終曲，比行板更慢…..不太快的快板，但充滿活力 (Finale, Piu Andante …..Allegro non troppo, ma con brio)
要做大膽的反動派談何容易，但布拉姆斯以其高度理性智慧，在世人的訝異中，在古典主義已成陳跡的十九世紀末，再創古典風格的第二盛世。但是布拉姆斯(Johannes Brahms, 1833-1897) 的反撲畢竟只是強弩之末，在其身後不復再有傳人，布拉姆斯也就成為名符其實「德奧古典主義的最後一人」。後人把他與巴赫(Johann Sebastian Bach, 1685-1750)、貝多芬 (Ludwig van Beethoven, 1770-1827) 並稱為「三B」。
布拉姆斯不隱瞞貝多芬在他心目中的地位和造成的心理壓力，「當你無時不刻聽到『那位巨人沉重的腳步聲時』，心中會做何感想？」。他一直到四十三歲才慎重其事的發表第一號交響曲，之後三首交響曲也都沒有標題。遵循嚴謹的古典主義一以貫之，後人因此慣稱他的第一號交響曲為「貝多芬第十號交響曲」。
